Marie Hayes Becomes Cape May County Surrogate

Cape May Court House, NJ, July 7, 2023: Former Cape May County Commissioner Marie Hayes, accompanied by family members in a private ceremony, took the oath of office on July 6, 2023, to become the Cape May County Surrogate.

Surrogate Hayes was nominated by Governor Phil Murphy and confirmed last week by the New Jersey State Senate to fill the vacancy created when Dean Marcolongo left the post to become a Superior Court Judge.

“I want to thank the Governor and the State Senate for their confidence in me,” Hayes said. “I also want to thank Senator Mike Testa and CapeGOP Chairman Mike Donohue for all their help in appointments process.”

Hayes will hold the position until after the General Election this Fall. She is a candidate for Surrogate and if successful will then begin a full five-year term.

“The Surrogate’s Office is a unique elective office,” Hayes said. “We help families with wills, adoptions, and guardianships, among other things. There is a real opportunity to help people that I am truly looking forward to in this new role.”
