New Roller Coaster Approved For Ocean City Boardwalk
A Zoning Board approval means that Playland's Castaway Cove can move forward with rebuilding the arcade and adding a roller coaster.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — Thanks to an approval from the Zoning Board, construction of a new roller coaster at Playland's Castaway Cove can continue.
The board decided that no height variance is needed for the construction of a third story; so not only can the new roller coaster be built, Playland can also rebuild the iconic pirate ship and parrot that sits atop the entrance, as OCNJ Daily reported.
"The pirate ship is the one thing that everybody keeps asking about," Brian Hartley, vice president of Playland, previously told Patch. "I think they've really come to know that as a landmark here on the boardwalk."

Bob Green, the original designer of the pirate ship, was at the meeting with Playland's owner Scott Simpson and Hartley, OCNJ Daily reported.
Construction has been stalled for several weeks, but can now continue, according to the outlet.

The third story will have a vestibule, stairs, an elevator and roof deck for the roller coaster, according to Zoning Board documents.
According to WPG Talk Radio, Playland hopes to have the new coaster open by summer of 2025.
The only details shared about the coaster itself is that it would be "family-friendly."
