N.J. Man Died From Heroin While Awaiting His Third Child's Birth [VIDEO]

Steve Schmincke of N.J. never got to see what his third child looked like. He died from a heroin overdose while his girlfriend was pregnant.

Steve Schmincke never got to see what his third child looked like.

He died from a heroin overdose while his girlfriend was pregnant.

The Schmincke family, who had planned an Easter egg hunt on the day Steve died, told The Press of Atlantic City Press that they're mourning the death of a 26-year-old man who just couldn't find a way to heal himself.

Or keep himself off the streets. And stay away from the lethal drug. And keep his parents from worrying all the time.

Tammy Schmincke told the newspaper that she found her son, Steven, sitting upright on a bed in their Egg Harbor Township home at about 9:30 a.m. on March 26. Her husband, Bill, entered the room and saw his son sitting motionless, then began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

“I already knew he was gone,” Bill told the newspaper.

Steven leaves behind two daughters, 4-year-old Cassidy and 5-year-old Abigail, and his services were held Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m. at the Scullville Bible Church, 1546 Mays Landing Road, Egg Harbor Township, according to his Adams-Perfect Funeral Home obituary.

A video of that service (see below) captured Bill's eulogy to his son, who noted that he was a lover of music whose room as a teen emulated a very small recording studio:

"You know someone that's struggling - if he's struggled, touch that person, reach that person, hug that person," he said. "They may not want to hear it, but they need to hear it. It's really important, very very important."

His wife, Elizabeth Morin, who is pregnant with Steven’s third child, has had trouble herself, appearing in police blotters on the Internet, along with Steven, on charges related to heroin addiction and possession.

Elizabeth and Steven were arrested just last October and charged with possession of a hypodermic needle and making terroristic threats. Morin was also charged with possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Egg Harbor Township police.

His struggle with addiction was noted within the tributes in his obituary on the funeral home's website:

"Your pain and struggle is over. You may now rest in glorious peace."

Steven initially was into prescription drugs, but turned to heroin as a cheaper alternative. He would occasionally come home - as he did on March 26 - and his parents would take him to rehab, but Steven continued to steal things, and pawn off the goods for money, so he could keep his heroin habit going, according to The Press account.

Mostly, he spent his days on the streets - until that fateful day. “We would get up in the middle of the night and drive around and look for him,” Bill told The Press. “Many, many, many sleepless nights.”
