Ocean City Business Group Opposing $15 an Hour Minimum Wage

Michele Gillian said the proposed minimum wage would change the look of Ocean City forever.

Ocean City, NJ -- A $15 an hour minimum wage would “change the look of Ocean City forever,” Michele Gillian told the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce last week, according to the Ocean City Gazette.

Gillian, the Chamber of Commerce's Executive Director, said voting no on separate bills in the State Senate and Assembly isn’t enough; Democrats must also be persuaded to vote no, according to the report.

However, State Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1), on of the few Democrats opposed to the legislation, said it isn’t likely that progressive Democrats supporting the bill can be persuaded to change their mind, according to the report.

Gillian said Ocean City’s economy, and the economy of other shore towns, depends on making enough money over a period of four months to support them the entire year, and a $15 an hour minimum wage would make that drastically more difficult.
