Ocean City Man Appointed Cape May County Prosecutor

Jeffrey H. Sutherland's nomination was approved on Thursday, according to The Press of Atlantic City.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — The New Jersey State Senate has confirmed an Ocean City man as Cape May County’s newest prosecutor. Jeffrey H. Sutherland will be the permanent replacement for Robert L. Taylor.

Sutherland was appointed on Thursday, The Press of Atlantic City reports. Sutherland said there will be no change to the county’s policy on undocumented immigrants, in which Immigration and Customs Enforcement is notified if an undocumented immigrant is charged with an indictable offense.

Robert W. Johnson has been serving as Acting Cape May County Prosecutor since Taylor retired in September when he turned 70, the maximum age allowed for the position.

Taylor has since filed a whistleblower lawsuit claiming the county has downplayed the seriousness of the opioid epidemic and claiming it has retaliated against him for his failure to participate in an investigation he says it opened because it had a vendetta.

Sutherland was named the chair of the Cape May County Democratic Party last year, according to the Ocean City Gazette. He was nominated for the position by State Sen. Jeff Van Drew.
