Ocean City Named The Safest City In New Jersey

OCEAN CITY, NJ — It wasn't long ago that Ocean City was named New Jersey's most "boring" city, according to MSN. But being supposedly boring has its perks, such as safety. Ocean City is the safest place in New Jersey, according to one report.

The City placed first on Background Check's 2019 list of the Safest Cities in New Jersey.

Ocean City only recorded 12 violent crimes in 2017 — 1.13 per 1,000 inhabitants, according to the report.

The website used the most recent FBI crime statistics and filtered out cities with fewer than 10,000 people. Background Checks then calculated violent-crime rates and property-crime rates per 1,000. Then they calculated the ratio of law enforcement workers per 1,000.

Background Check's safety-index formula weighs violent-crime rate at 50 percent. Property-crime rate and officer rate were considered at 25 percent each.

Here was the top 10 in New Jersey:

1. Ocean City, 1.35 safety index
2. Weehawken Township, 1.09
3. Ventnor City, 1.07
4. Wall Township, 0.94
5. Tenafly, 0.93
6. Florham Park, 0.93
7. Cranford Township, 0.91
8. Roselle Park, 0.91
9. Marlboro Township 0.9
10. Ridgefield, 0.89

The bottom of New Jersey's list featured the following:

1. Bridgeton, -1.22
2. Trenton, -1
3. Asbury Park, 0.95
4. Millville, -0.76
5. Elizabeth, -0.72
6. Vineland, -0.49
7. Lindenwold, -0.46
8. Irvington, -0.36
9. Orange City, -0.32
10. Paterson, -0.26
