Ocean City Team Finishes Second in Mathematical Mayhem at Stockton University

Nearly 90 students from 10 high schools participated in the event.

Ocean City, NJ -- A trio of Ocean City High School students took second place in the group competition at Stockton University’s fifth annual Mathematical Mayhem, the University said this week.

Liza Milov, Scott Steinberg and Kevin Yang took second place for Ocean CIty. Cedar Creek finished first, and Middletown High School North took third.

Nearly 90 students from 10 high schools competed in individual and team exams designed to challenge students and encourage their pursuit of being problem solvers.

Other participating high schools included: Absegami High School, Atlantic City High School, Atlantic County Institute of Technology (ACIT), Cumberland Regional High School, Egg Harbor Township High School, Mainland Regional High School and Southern Regional High School.

“Continue to foster your love for math,” Stockton Interim Provost and Executive Vice President Susan Davenport said. “Math is versatile, marketable and offers many career choices.”

“The world reduces to patterns” that can be modeled through mathematics, Stockton University Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Peter Straub said. “The world reduces to patterns” that can be modeled through mathematics. “Math has practical applications and underlies everything scientists and engineers do.”

Dr. Chia-Lin Wu, of Galloway, professor of Mathematics, founded the event and created and graded the tests with fellow Mathematics faculty. The number of high school students and their teachers as well as Stockton student volunteers who sacrificed their sleep on a Saturday morning was a testament to their dedication, he said.

The event began with 30 competitors five years ago, and has tripled in size since.
