UPDATE: Ocean City High School Student Racks Up Nearly $400 Lunch Bill - And Won't Pay

The parents say they were unaware of the accumulating debt, and say the district should've warned them sooner.

Is it possible to have a school lunch bill approach $400?

It is if you charge your lunches over a long period of time - and then refuse to pay the bill.

Parents of an Ocean City, N.J. High School student who say they were unaware their son was charging school lunches are now refusing to pay $400 to the district, The Press of Atlantic City reports.

Suzanne and Mark Hornick say they provided their son with a lunch every day, and had no reason to believe their son was charging lunch when he went to school, according to the report. They also blame the school for not alerting them to their son’s growing debt, and the school admits they didn’t send a letter home until July of last year.

In his first year in the district, the student charged $382.45 in the cafeteria, according to the report.

The school district allows a student to continue to buy lunch, even if that student owes the district money. The school now has a policy in which it provides a cheaper lunch to students once that student hits $10 in debt.
