Parkland Shooting Survivor Targets Politician In Ocean City Area

David Hogg criticized State Sen. Jeff Van Drew for his A rating and contributions from the NRA.

David Hogg, the student activist and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting survivor, is taking aim at New Jersey State Sen. and Democratic Congressional candidate Jeff Van Drew.

“Remember, both Democrats and Republicans take NRABloodMoney,” Hogg said via Twitter over the weekend. “Just look up New Jersey State Sen. Jeff Van Drew. He’s a Democrat with an A rating from the NRA.”

Hogg became the face of the movement for better gun control laws following the shooting, but says he is a supporter of the Second Amendment. In a pinned post at the top of his Twitter page, he asks that the issue not become a Democrat vs. Republican issue.

"Can we please not debate this as Democrats and Republicans but discuss this as Americans," he says in the post. "In the comments if you see someone you disagree with do not attack each other talk to one another, this applies to me too. WE MUST WORK TOGETHER TO SAVE OUR FUTURE."

Van Drew is running for the Second Congressional District seat that will be vacated by longtime Republican Frank LoBiondo at the end of the year.

Democrats have viewed the seat as one that can be flipped in November, and over the weekend National Republican Congressional Committee Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio) acknowledged that the seat is a “recruiting hole” for his party, according to nj.com.

However, the Democratic Primary is filled with progressives ready to strike at Van Drew on his stance, including retired teacher Tanzie Youngblood; Will Cunningham, a former staffer for U.S. Sen. Cory Booker; and activist Nate Kleinman.

Van Drew has acknowledged receiving over $3,000 from the NRA and the National Shooting Sports Foundation in 2007 and 2008, according to philly.com.

Van Drew has been distinguished as a “Gun-Sense Candidate” by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a move that has been criticized by bluejersey.com as an endorsement for a pro-gun candidate during a critical election year.

It’s an issue that has haunted Van Drew’s campaign. During a town hall in Northfield in February, a 17-year-old high school student confronted Van Drew on his pro-gun stance, stating he lied when he told her class he “never accepted money from the NRA.” See video below.

The Democratic and Republican primaries are set for June 5. The general election is Nov. 6.
