This Popular Jersey Shore Bridge Is Getting More Expensive

Bridge users will see higher tolls this summer.

MARGATE, NJ — Drivers taking the Downbeach Express this summer will see an increase in their tolls.

Formerly known as the Margate Bridge and Causeway, Class 1 Express Pass holders will pay $2.00 per crossing (a 15-cent increase), and Class 1 Cash patrons will pay $3.00 (a 50-cent increase) starting June 16.

The privately-owned bridges use its own Express Pass for payment; unlike other bridges, it does not use E-ZPass.

"The Downbeach Express is a privately owned, self-funded crossing — every dollar of toll revenue is reinvested directly into the four historic bridges and two-mile causeway connecting Margate, Ventnor, Longport, and Egg Harbor Township," officials said in a press release. "These structures are nearly 95 years old. Keeping them safe, modern, and storm-ready takes continuous capital investment."

The last price increase was in 2024.

“Our patrons trust us to keep these bridges safe, open, and moving — in every season and every storm. This adjustment is what makes that possible. We are reinvesting every cent into the structures, the technology, and the environment that make the Downbeach what it is. It is the most efficient path to keeping the Express the most affordable, most reliable crossing in South Jersey,” said Robert Snyder, Chief Operating Officer, Ole Hansen and Sons, Inc. The company manages the bridges.
