Preparing to Recover from Jonas with Rainbow International

With Winter Storm Jonas having slammed the New Jersey coastline this past weekend, Rainbow International, a leading home and commercial restoration company, has come out with a list of tips from president Mark Welstead on how home and business owners can begin to pick up the pieces.

• When in doubt, throw it away! Any items that have come in contact with floodwater should be thrown out. This includes bottled water, canned goods, plastic utensils, baby bottles and more.
• Beware of scammers. Hire only professional, reputable contractors for cleanup and repair needs. Avoid the “drive-by” contractor.
• Disinfection protection. “Once floodwaters have receded, carefully clean and disinfect each wet item to protect your home and family from sewage or chemical contaminants,” said Welstead. Be certain to wear protective clothing, including rubber gloves and boots, during cleanup activities. Not sure where to start? • Should your basement be flooded, drain it gradually. Rainbow recommends draining about 1/3 per day in order to prevent structural damage and collapse that could result from raid water removal.
