OCEAN CITY, NJ — A protest has been planned as part of the Black Lives Matter movement for Tuesday in Ocean City, according to Mayor Jay Gillian. Few official details about the protest are available.

A flyer has circulated on social media saying a peaceful protest for George Floyd will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the end of the Ninth Street Bridge. It wasn't immediately clear who put out the flyer, and no other information appeared on it.

"Police are investigating further, coordinating with several other agencies and preparing for any potential situation," Gillian said. "As we receive additional information, we will inform the public."

Floyd, a black man, was handcuffed and lying face down on a Minneapolis street Monday when officer Derek Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd's neck for 8 minutes, 46 seconds. Floyd became unresponsive after 2 minutes, 53 seconds, according to the criminal complaint.

Chauvin was charged Friday with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. In the wake of Floyd's death, protests against racism and police brutality have sparked around the world.
