Reading for Pie: Ocean City Primary School Students Participate in Read Across America Challenge
The two week-long event culminates with students throwing pies at teachers on March 18.

Ocean City, NJ – Students at the Ocean City Primary School will get the chance to throw as many pies at as many teachers as they wish, depending on how much they read.
The pie-throwing, set for Friday, March 18, 1:45 p.m. at the Primary School, will be the culmination of a two week-long reading challenge. Students are asked to read as much as they can in honor of Read Across America and the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
The top readers for each grade level will then win the prize of getting to throw pies in their teachers’ faces, with the number of pies being determined by the amount students read.

“It’s a win-win for the kids,” Ocean City Primary School Principal Cathy Smith said. “All they have to do is read their hearts out, log their minutes, and return their record sheets. And the more students read, the more staff members get a pie in their face. It’s just one more way we are promoting reading throughout the month.”
In a 30-minute assembly, after the top readers in each class are recognized, the pie-ing will begin. Last year, five staff members were pied, including the principal, but students are aiming to read even more this year to have the opportunity to pie even more staff members.

Pieing is contagious in the school district. On March 14, the Ocean City High School Leadership Club will host its inaugural Pie Showdown during lunch, in which teachers will be pied.
