Southend Beach Replenishment Project Halts as Dredge Undergoes Repairs

The Liberty Island hopper dredge being used for the southend beach replenishment project is undergoing repairs in Virginia, bringing the project to a halt, the Ocean City Gazette reports.

The dredge had an unspecified issue with its motor over the weekend, according to the report. There was no timetable given for repairs.

The City is still hopeful the project can be finished by July 15, according to the report.

Over the weekend, Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian said the project was 39 percent complete.

The dredge also underwent repairs about a month ago. Following repairs, there was no change in the project schedule.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company of Oak Brook, Illinois, is handling the project for $57.6 million. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing the project.
