Southend Beach Replenishment Project in Ocean City on Hold Again

A mechanical problem shut down the project as it was set to resume this week.

The south end beach replenishment project is on hold once again as further repairs for the Liberty Island hopper dredge are needed, the Ocean City Gazette reports.

After a delay while the dredge was having a new engine installed, work was set to resume this week.

A mechanical problem brought the project to a halt, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is awaiting word on the issue and the estimated time for repairs, according to the report.

It is the third time the dredge has needed repairs. The projected end date for the program had already been pushed back from July to September before this week’s mechanical problem.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company of Oak Brook, Illinois, is handling the project for $57.6 million. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing the project.
