Thin Blue Line Represents Solidarity Between Ocean City, Police Department

Ocean City, NJ -- The faded double yellow line in front of the Ocean City Police Department has been refreshed and painted blue down the center to show the city’s solidarity with the police.

The Thin Blue Line, a symbol of the police officer’s role in separating the good from the bad, is painted down the center of the roadway on the 800 block of Central Avenue, Ocean City Police Chief Chad Callahan and PBA President TJ Mullineaux announced on Friday.

“Standing shoulder to shoulder on this line, police officers demonstrate to all those we protect from those who may want to inflict harm,” the police department said in a statement.

The blue line represents law enforcement, the top line represents the community and the bottom line represents criminals. The idea is that law enforcement stands between the community and the criminals.

In addition to the solidarity between the city and police, the line also represents solidarity within the profession, particularly in the event of a police officer’s death. According to the department, there have been 123 officers killed this year.

The Thin Blue Line originated in the United Kingdom, and is now popular in the United States and Canada to honor the fallen and show support for the living within the law enforcement community.
