Upcoming Events in Ocean City: Frankenstein Exhibit, Hero Walk

The Frankenstein Exhibit opens Wednesday. The Hero Walk is Sunday.

The following information was submitted by Mark Soifer, Ocean City Public Relations Director:

Last October Ron MacCloskey, a life–long Frankenstein fan, exhibited his collection of portraits and cartoons of the world’s most famous monster at the Ocean City Free Public Library.

This October, the Library will feature an all new exhibit from MacCloskey’s collection starting Wednesday, Oct. 1 and running through the month in its Atrium.

Among over 50 portraits is one of Elvis and Priscilla Presley.

“He loved old Horror Movies, especially Frankenstein,” Presley told MacCloskey.

Also in the exhibit is a cartoon by internationally syndicated artist of the “Close to Home” strip, John McPherson, who was grand marshal of Ocean City’s Doo Dah Parade two years ago.

In addition to the exhibit, MacCloskey will present “The World of Frankenstein, a Fan’s Tribute to the Monster.”

This is an original show written and performed by MacCloskey.

It is scheduled for Thursday,, Oct. 23 starting 7 p.m. in the Library’s Auditorium, 17th and Simpson Avenue.

Admission is free to both Frankenstein events.

HERO WALK (Oct. 5): The John R. Elliott 5K Hero Walk promotes the vital, life saving need for designated drivers. The campaign was organized 14 years ago by William and Muriel Elliott whose son John was tragically killed by a drunk driver.

The Elliott’s have done an amazing job raising awareness and funds to focus on the need for designated drivers. Their program has already been adopted by several states. The Elliott’s goal is to have every State in the country adopt life saving, designated driver legislation.

This year, the Hero Walk will provide photo booths and frames on site so that participants taking the “Hero pledge” can post their photos on the Foundation’s Facebook page, Instagram and their own social media.

Registration for the 5K Boardwalk event is 9 a.m. at Sports and Civic Center, Sixth and Boardwalk. A ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. with the walk following at 11 a.m. For information, call (609) 626-3880 or visit www.theherowalk.org.

Through October: The Betts Family, three generations of Cape May County photographers, will exhibit their photos at the Ocean City Arts Center, 17th and Simpson Avenue throughout the month.

Grandmother Dr. Janice Lake Betts is a direct descendent of the Lake Family, founders of Ocean City. Her son James and grand daughter Felicia Betts will also show their photographs.

A “Meet the Artists” reception will be held Friday, Oct. 10 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Through October, beginning Oct. 6: The Art on Asbury Gallery, 608 Asbury Avenue, announces that its October Exhibit will be “A Tribute to Your Favorite Artist. You can expect a show in the styles of renowned artists like Picasso, Monet, Cezanne, Gauguin, Matisse, Adams and more.

The show begins with a “Meet the Artist Reception” and awards presentation on Friday, Oct. 8 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and continues through the month. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
