Breaking: The Mercedes SUV was stolen Saturday night out of a Sweetbriar Avenue driveway. The key fob had been left in it overnight.

PARAMUS, NJ — Two men who allegedly stole and later crashed a Mercedes Benz Saturday night into Sunday morning struggled with police officers before they were arrested, authorities said.

Jaquan Summer, 25, and Shakir Curry, 30, both of Newark, were charged with auto theft, aggravated assault, eluding police and possession of a stolen vehicle, said Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg.

Police received a report at 1:16 a.m. that the vehicle was seen in town and Officer Michael Mordaga saw it driving south on Forest Avenue, Ehrenberg said.

Mordaga tried to stop the vehicle, but it fled onto Forest Avenue and onto Passaic Street and then Farview Avenue where officers Kevin Grady and Timothy Reed also tried to stop it, the chief said.

The Mercedes turned onto Pleasant Avenue, a dead end street, and crashed into a gate at the end of the street, Ehrenberg said.

Summer and Curry fled on foot, but police caught up and struggled with them before taking them into custody, the chief said.

A third suspect escaped; Paramus police and a K9 unit from the Bergen County Sheriff's Department searched but were unable to find the suspect.

Summer and Curry were booked on the charges and remanded to the Bergen County Jail.
