WATCH: Bear In Tree Caused Commotion In Paramus Monday

Police chased the bear up a tree Monday morning, and it stayed up there for about 12 hours.

PARAMUS, NJ — A bear that police chased up a tree Monday morning finally came down Monday night. Some observers were "getting a kick" out of the animal, but they wanted the bear gone, one reporter said.

The bear was spotted near Sirianni Park and Bergen Community College Monday morning. Police chased the bear, which climbed a tree on Benton Road, authorities said.

PIX11 reported that the bear came down on its own just before 9 p.m.

Police reported at 9:17 p.m. that they were unable to capture the bear. The animal was last seen moving north west from Midland Avenue. Police said they would make extra checks of the area. It was last seen moving north west from the Midland Avenue area.

"Bear sighting in a residential neighborhood in #Paramus! It just woke up from a nap. I think it's so cute, and people are getting a kick out of it... but they also want him out ASAP. Animal control on scene now," Reena Roy of CBS2 said in a tweet.

Sirianni Park is located next to Bergen Community College near Midland Avenue and Route 17.

The New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife reported there were 18 black bear sightings reported in New Jersey from March 21 to April 20. Another five were spotted at bird feeders.

The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife has issued the following bear safety tips:

  • Never feed or approach a bear.
  • Make a bear aware of your presence by speaking in an assertive voice, singing, clapping your hands, or making other noises.
  • Avoid direct eye contact and never run away from a bear. Instead, slowly back away.
