Bergen Community College Unveils New Student Center
Newly renovated building to serve as hub of student life
Bergen Community College opened its new $5.5 million student center to the public Tuesday.
The center, in the making since early 2010, came highly anticipated, said Nestor Melendez, director of student life at the school.
"I believe we set a world record for asking, 'Is it ready yet?'" Melendez said.
The 24,294 square foot space serves as both and entrance and hub to the college for students. A new seating area includes 110 seats and a renovated Dunkin' Donuts, which students quickly patronized after County Executive Kathleen Donovan cut the ribbon to open the new center.
"I can't wait to enjoy the facility and I thank you for letting all of us be a part of this today," Donovan said.
The work to renovate the existing student center began in early 2010, when the college started the work of constructing a 7,556 square foot addition to the existing building. A two-story wall of glass represents the new face of the Pitkin Education Center, the main building at the Paramus campus.
"“With more than 17,000 students working toward degrees and certificates, the need for a larger, updated space to accommodate student activities and support services has been apparent for some time,” Dr. Jose Adames, Bergen’s interim president, said.

The building incorporates several green design elements. The roof, light fixtures and even the restrooms are designed to be energy efficient.
"This is truly a standout building," said Cid Wilson, vice chairman of the Bergen Community College Board of Trustees.
The new building will serve as a center for student life, Student Government Association president Jesse Lazaro said. There are now 22 additional offices for student organizations and WiFi throughout the building.
"We are all very excited to embark on this new journey and this new chapter in BCC history," he said.
