Bergen County Needs Checks and Balances

For more than a decade, Bergen County has been governed by one political party.

For more than a decade, Bergen County has been governed by one political party. After that much time, taxpayers have every right to ask: Where are the checks and balances?

One party rule is not healthy for Bergen County. Taxpayers deserve elected officials who will question spending, challenge the status quo, and demand accountability, especially when dealing with multimillion-dollar budgets, major capital projects, and costly new initiatives. When the same party controls county government year after year, there is too great a risk that spending decisions receive more approval than scrutiny.

A rubber stamp is not oversight. When major spending proposals, capital projects, and budget increases move forward with little meaningful debate or scrutiny, taxpayers are left wondering whether every decision has received the careful examination it deserves. Every taxpayer should have confidence that someone is willing to ask tough questions and determine whether there is a better, more efficient, or less costly alternative.
