Congressman: Fight Opioid Crisis With Federal Funds

Rep. Josh Gottheimer will meet with Sheriff Saudino Monday to urge state officials to combat opioid addiction.

PARAMUS, N.J. — Combatting the ongoing opioid crisis in New Jersey is the topic of a meeting tomorrow with recovery addicts and county and federal officials.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer will join Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino and recovery advocates at CarePlus, an addiction recovery facility, in Paramus at 11:30 a.m. They will call on state officials to submit an application to receive federal funds to help opioid addicts.

From 2014 to 2015 there was a 9 percent increase in the number of psychiatric and addiction patients in Bergen County, a report by the New Jersey Hospital Association showed.

Nationwide, the rate of deaths caused by drug overdoses increased 14 percent between 2013 and 2014, information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows. New Jersey accounted for 1,253 of the 47,055 deaths caused by drug overdose in 2014.
