The family of a girl who lost two toes to a Garden State Plaza escalator in August is suing Macy’s for $10 million in damages, according to a CBS News report.
The girl, identified as 10-year-old Juliana Valdez, was shopping for back-to-school clothing with her family when her sneaker became trapped in the escalator. A bystander hit the escalator’s emergency stop button, according to CBS, and Juliana was rushed to the hospital. She has undergone 15 surgeries since the incident and lost two toes, according to the report.
The poorly maintained escalator is among the oldest in the state, dating back to 1958, according to an attorney representing the family.
