After authorities made contact with Lopez, an investigation revealed that he murdered his mother "days earlier," Grewal said.

Police found Susana Lopez's remains in a detached garage adjacent to the residence, the prosecutor said.

The criminal complaint in the case states the weapon used was a boxcutter, NJ.com reported, and that the body was not moved until days after the murder, which was sometime between Oct. 14 and Tuesday.

Neighbors told NJ.com that they had not seen Susana Lopez for about two weeks.

Jesus Lopez is in the custody of the Bergen County Sheriff pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court, Grewal said.
