Paramus Public Schools Host Special Olympics Leadership Summit

PHS was the gathering place for more than 170 area students to brainstorm and set goals to create more inclusive school communities

Over 170 students attended the 2017 Fall Special Olympics North Youth Leadership Summit for Unified Champion Schools at Paramus High School on November 3. Students involved with Play Unified Clubs from West Brook Middle School, East Brook Middle School and PHS joined with their peers from 10 other schools in Bergen, Passaic and Union counties. They discussed what it would mean to take their Unified Champion Schools and make them "We Choose to Include Schools." The Choose to Include Campaign is an initiative by Special Olympics to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Each club developed Choose to Include goals and brainstormed ideas for unified leadership, unified sports and whole school engagement activities that will help them reach these goals. Project Unify’s vision of social inclusion is for all students to engage in positive ways and provide a variety of experiences that build on individual strengths and respect diversity. Every student is given a chance to contribute and participate and are noticed for their similarities and strengths, rather than disabilities.
