Resident Nearly Victim Of Diversion Burglary: Paramus Police

The man said he was with the water company and needed to check the homeowner's pipes, police said.

PARAMUS, NJ — A resident confronted a burglar during a diversion break-in recently, police said.

The homeowner lives in the area of Paramus Road and Johnson Court was approached by a man who said he was a police officer and needed to see the resident's backyard, police said.

A second man entered the unlocked front door and was confronted by a second resident, police said. The man said he was with the water company and needed to check the home's pipes.

The men were described as possibly Hispanic and had olive-colored skin, police said. They did not steal anything fled the scene in a white pickup, authorities said.

Police said residents should call local authorities to confirm if someone claiming to be a police officer or someone from a utility company is legitimate or not.
