What's Open, What's Closed?

Many businesses and institutions remain open on MLK Day, as only 45 percent of U.S. employers offer a paid day off, CNBC reported in 2019. But more workplaces are recognizing the holiday, as only 28 percent gave the day off in 2009, according to Bloomberg Law.

As a federal and state holiday, many government services are closed on MLK Day. Here's a look at what's open and closed around Parsippany.

  • Schools: the Parsippany-Troy Hills School District is closed Monday.
  • Sanitation services: the township won't collect garbage or recycling on Monday, and the recycling center will be closed. To see how the holiday may impact collection, view Parsippany's 2023 recycling and sanitation schedule.
  • State services: State agencies observe MLK Day. So most offices, including all Motor Vehicle Commission facilities, are closed. However, many of the MVC's online services will remain available.
  • Public transit: NJ Transit will operate on an "enhanced weekend" schedule, which includes additional trains during peak periods. The PATH will have a modified weekend schedule, with supplemental service throughout the morning commute. Find SEPTA schedules here.
  • U.S. Postal Service: Post offices will be closed, and there will be no mail delivery.
  • Banks: The Federal Reserve observes the holiday, so many banks do, as well. Banks scheduled to close include Bank of America, Capital One Bank, Chase, Citibank, PNC Bank, Santander Bank, Wells Fargo and TD Bank.
  • Stock market: the U.S. Stock exchange, including Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange, will close. The market will reopen at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
  • Other private businesses: Grocery stores, retailers, restaurants and most other private businesses remain open, according to HolidayShoppingHours.com. But some employers grant the day off or reduce hours, so it helps to check before you go.
