NJ Town To Raise Ukraine Flag, Joining Others

The Township Council passed a resolution March 15 supporting Ukraine and its people amid Russia's invasion.

PARSIPPANY, NJ — Parsippany will hold a Ukraine flag-raising ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at Town Hall (1001 Parsippany Blvd.). Mayor James R. Barberio invited the community to the flag-raising meant to show "solidarity with the people of Ukraine."

The Township Council passed a resolution March 15 supporting Ukraine and its people amid Russia's invasion. Council President Michael dePierro presented the resolution to Rev. Stephan Bilyk, pastor of Saint John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Whippany.

Parsippany will be among several Morris County towns have raised Ukraine's flag, including Madison and Morristown. Madison leaders raised the flag March 7 with three Ukrainian international students from Drew University. Read more: Morris Co. Town Flying Ukraine Flag For Next Month

Russia's Feb. 24 invasion escalated an eight-year war that centered around Ukraine's government and separatists in the nation's Crimea and Donbas regions. The United Nations reported 1,151 civilians killed since the invasion as of midnight Monday (Ukraine time). The United Nations believes the death toll is "considerably higher," with delays in receiving information and reports pending corroboration.
