PARSIPPANY, NJ - German Santana, Jr., a senior at Parsippany Hills High School, was presented with the Ruth Award at a virtual awards ceremony on June 1 by Patricia Colbert, a member of the Board of the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC).

This award is presented annually to a senior high school student who is an active Morristown Medical Center (MMC) volunteer and completes more than 50 hours and six months of consecutive service. Santana was recognized with the Ruth Award for more than 183 hours of service over two and a half years.

Senior high school students who volunteer at MMC may choose to complete an award application, along with an essay, for consideration. One winner is selected each year by the WAMMC Hospital Liaison Committee.

In his essay, Santana stated, “I joined one of the best programs I believe I could ever get into." He further shared that he believes that MMC not only gave him opportunities, but also the chance to build himself. "By putting effort and hard work into volunteering, I was able to realize that the effort you put into your work is how successful you can be.”.

Santana is currently enrolled in the Cyber Security Program at Vo-Tech and at County College of Morris where he is working toward his Associates Degree. He is planning on pursuing an advanced degree, with a goal toward becoming a police officer, all while continuing his volunteer services at MMC.

The Ruth Award, which is a one-time award of $500 to offset the cost of college tuition, is designed to recognize outstanding service to Morristown Medical Center for dependability, loyalty and unselfish service to others. This award was created in honor of Ruth Epstein, a devoted WAMMC member and President from 1967-1970. Epstein was dedicated to helping others and exemplified the volunteer spirit.
