Pool 'Vapor Cloud' Sends Children To Hospital: Parsippany Police

Combination of chlorine and muriatic acid sent people into respiratory distress at Glacier Pool, police said.

PARSIPPANY, NJ - Hazardous material exposure sickened dozens at Glacier Hills Pool on Friday morning, according to the Parsippany Police Department.

Police said approximately 27 people were at the pool, most of which were children attending swimming lessons, and were exposed to a vapor cloud caused by a mixture of pool chemicals.

Four children and one adult were transported to the Morristown Medical Center for respiratory distress and approximately eighteen others are being treated on scene, police said.

The preliminary investigation seems to have resulted in the chemical mixture being chlorine and muriatic acid, police said.

The incident happened shortly before 9:30 a.m. when the Parsippany–Troy Hills Police Department responded to a hazardous materials incident at the Glacier Hills Association Pool, at 7 Forum Court.

Parsippany Police along with Morris County HazMat, Morris County EMS, Parsippany EMS, Saint Clare’s Hospital EMS and Fire Districts 1 and 5 responded to the scene which is currently under investigation.

The surrounding community is not in danger or at risk of exposure, police said.
