NJ Mother's Day Weekend Accidents: 3 Killed, Several Hurt

Three people were killed and several people were hurt in a tragic series of events in New Jersey during Mother's Day weekend.

The incidents included at least three highway crashes that left two people dead and a disastrous, fast-moving storm that knocked over a tree that fell on a tent, killing a man and injuring six others during a Mother's Day party.

Here are the incidents that have happened since Saturday:

• A 28-year-old New Jersey man was killed and six others were injured on Mother's Day when they were struck by a falling tree during a fast-moving storm, authorities said. The man, who was not identified, was sitting inside a tent in a backyard of the Passaic home, celebrating Mother’s Day with family and friends around 4:58 p.m., when the tree cracked in half and crashed on him. • An armed carjacking ended with a man killed early Saturday on the Garden State Parkway, according to police. Keith Belton, 24, of East Orange, was identified as the man who allegedly carjacked a car in Elizabeth, led police on a chase on the Garden State Parkway and then was killed by a car as he tried to flee on foot, police said. • A couple had to be airlifted to the St. Barnabas burn unit after a fire broke out in their home in Keansburg early Sunday morning, according to an Asbury Park Press report. The fire broke out before 5 a.m. at a home in the 400 block of Main Street. Their two children managed to get safely out of the home, but their 4-month-old puppy perished in the blaze. • A couple returning home was beaten, tied up and then robbed in their house Saturday night in Holmdel Township, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office announced. The incident occurred at a home on Banyan Boulevard in Holmdel. Read more here....
• A New Jersey man was killed in a Garden State Parkway crash this weekend, police said. Robert McGary, 49, of Seaside Heights, died after his car crashed Saturday into trees off the northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway, according to state police. Read more here....

This incident happened on Monday:

• A fatal crash partially shut down an N.J. highway on Monday, police said. Emergency responders were on the scene of the serious crash reported on Route 78 in Union Township, according to state police. Read more here..
