The boat had left Point Judith, Rhode Island, its home port, on Wednesday, according to Marine Traffic.com.
The boat was known to fish for scallops as recently as 2020, and also fishes for squid. Access to the scallop fishery opened on Wednesday, according to NOAA Fisheries, but it's not clear whether that was its target when it headed out on Wednesday, or what brought it south to the Jersey Shore.
It was fishing for squid in July 2022 when a crew member went overboard, according to NBC 10 WJAR. The man's body was recovered about three weeks later, ABC6 reported.
