Crashes – one involving a bag of concrete mix – shut down two major New Jersey roadways on what became a messy traffic day in New Jersey. One highway promises to be closed during the afternoon and evening rush-hour commute.

A key stretch of Route 18 through East Brunswick will likely remain closed through the evening rush hour and into the nighttime hours Tuesday because of an overturned tanker truck at the entrance to the New Jersey Turnpike.

A fatal 5-car crash also closed down a New Jersey highway overnight, police said. The crash happened at a major traffic point in South Brunswick. A Middlesex County woman died in the 5 vehicle crash, police said.

Bags of concrete mix struck a car and left a mess on Route 1 after flying off a concrete truck Tuesday morning, closing the roadway for about 45 minutes, according to West Windsor police.

The bags flew off a truck that was headed south, and landed in the northbound lanes. At least one bag hit a car, breaking the windshield and sending a 22-year-old Trenton woman to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The woman was suffering from lacerations to her arm, and may have inhaled some of the concrete mix from the bag that hit her car.

The driver, a 37-year-old North Brunswick man, pulled over into the nearby Buffalo Wild Wings and waited for police. His tractor trailer had been hauling about 30 bags of mix south on Route 1 when it began to sway shortly after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Read more...
