A Flash Flood Watch will be in place overnight through Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service announced.

A Flash Flood Watch will be in place overnight through Tuesday morning for much of New Jersey, the National Weather Service announced.

The watch is in place in Central and Southern New Jersey, including the following counties: Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Monmouth, Gloucester, Mercer, Middlesex, Burlington, Ocean and Salem.

"Bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms may produce narrow swaths of very heavy rainfall in a short period of time. This could lead to excessive short-term runoff and flash flooding," the NWS said.

The rain could start as early as 6 p.m. in some places but forecasters with the National Weather Service predict the heaviest rain will happened between 3 and 8 a.m. Tuesday. Some areas could see an inch of rain per hour for up to three hours, the NWS said.

Impacts could include road closures, basement flooding and small stream flooding in addition to flash flooding, the NWS said.

The rain is expect to clear by Tuesday afternoon.
