POINT PLEASANT BEACH – Just what was going on at a Water Street home on Tuesday night is anybody's guess.

And that includes the owners of the home, according to app.com.

But the Berkeley Township Hazmat Team and the FBI were on the scene. Authorities evacuated surrounding homes, but little information was provided to area residents.

An FBI spokeswoman confirmed the agency's involvement.

“In light of recent events this past week it’s not unusual for an increase of reports of suspicious circumstances," said Doreen Holder. "The vast majority of which are deemed not credible. And currently we are evaluating a suspicious material in Point Pleasant. And at this time there are no credible threats to public safety.”
Holder said the investigation is ongoing. Authorities haven't yet determined what the suspicious material is.

One of the home's owners said there were signs of a break-in, but police shared little information with them.

“We really don’t know anything," Eileen Palmer said in a brief phone call. "We have not been told anything. All we know, it was a break-in.”

Catherine Totin was ordered to stay in her home, but not told why.

"The police would not say one word," she said.

Chris Zingerman, 19, described the scene as "crazy."
