Point Beach Mayor Steps Down After An "Interesting Eight Years"

Vincent Barrella survived a recall attempt, led borough through Superstorm Sandy.

POINT PLEASANT BEACH- Outgoing Mayor Vincent Barrella stepped down from the dais for the last time recently, after a sometimes tumultuous eight years presiding over the borough, according to the Ocean Star.

“I have tried always to stay true to my beliefs and fight hard for what I believe in,” he said. “Make sure that when I do this job, I did it for the people of Point Pleasant Beach and not to benefit myself in any way. It has been trying. It has been much harder on my family.”

Barrella survived a recall attempt in 2010 and ran as an independent.

“Me, I am a litigator,” he said. “You punch me, I punch you back. So that stuff never really bothered me. But I know it bothered them [my family] immensely and what does bother me is that some that signed that never bothered to apologize to them, not to me.”

Mayor-elect Stephen Reid gave Barrella a proclamation on behalf of the council and thanked him for his service.

“Mr. Barrella is known for holding true to his convictions, fighting for his beliefs and being an impassioned borough resident,” the proclamation states.

Barrella called the proclamation “a bit of a surprise, but a nice one.”

Barrella decided not to run for re-election in the November general election.
