Point Pleasant Area Schools Reportedly Protesting State Aid Cuts

The school districts were reportedly among dozens trying to get across to legislators just how devastating the cuts will be.

Point Pleasant Beach Point Pleasant Boro were among a number of districts reportedly expected to gather to protest the impact of state aid cuts on some districts on Tuesday, according to NJ0101.5.

Districts around the state are bringing their protest to the steps of the Statehouse as Gov. Phil Murphy prepares to deliver his budget speech for 2019-2020.

Under S2, the law passed last July, districts receiving so-called adjustment aid are losing that aid over a six-year period. In addition, those districts losing aid that are considered under adequacy, meaning they don't spend as much per student as the state says is necessary for a thorough and efficient education, but increase their property tax levy by 2 percent.

School district officials in Point Pleasant Boro were looking at their next moves last fall after the New Jersey Department of Education rejected the district's application for emergency aid for the 2018-19 school year.

The school district had sought relief from the education department on cuts to its adjustment aid, asking for $364,599 for the 2018-19 school year. But the Department of Education didn't see it that way, refusing to provide assistance.
