Point Pleasant Beach officials are looking to place what could be a complete ban on plastic straws that are sold at stores.

The Point Pleasant Beach Council introduced an ordinance on Tuesday that could ban businesses or stores from selling plastic straws to a customer.

The ordinance will be considered for second reading and final passage at the council's regular meeting on August 6th at 7:30 p.m. at Borough Hall.

Point Pleasant Beach officials said the straws can pollute the environment and impact the tourism and fishing industry, especially since they can end up in the garbage at the beach.

"If you're a mayor of a town that's surrounded by water, you have to take action," Mayor Stephen Reid said.

Reid said the ordinance would not apply to paper straws or a form of recyclable plastic that can break down in the environment.
