Work To Begin On Failing Point Pleasant Beach Bridge

Restrictions are now in place.

Restrictions are in pace now that work on a failing Broadway Bridge in Point Pleasant Beach will soon begin, officials say.

The bridge has been closed to all traffic that's over 3 tons, police said. Vehicles over 3 tons should seek alternate routes until repairs are completed.

Traffic on the Richard E. Lane Bridge on Broadway will also be reduced to one lane, according to The Ocean Star, while emergency repairs were underway to repair the span’s 21 deteriorating timber pilings.

Repairs to the bridge are expected to begin later this month, and primary repairs will take roughly a month to complete, according to The Ocean Star. The bridge crosses Cooks Creek.

Signs have been posted on all approaches to the bridge, and the repairs are expected to cost about $300,000. They'll be undertaken by Walker Diving Underwater Construction LLC of Hammonton, according to The Asbury Park Press.

The four-lane bridge is about 130 feet in length and was last rehabilitated in 1983, according to the Press. A plaque placed at the center of the span indicates that the bridge was named in 2000 for Richard E. Lane, a former longtime county engineer.
