The Arts Council of Princeton Awarded 'Favorite Art Gallery'

On March 14, ACP's Taplin Gallery was named Favorite Art Gallery in 2018 JerseyArts.com People's Choice Awards.

PRINCETON, NJ — The Arts Council of Princeton (ACP) announced today it accepted the award for Favorite Art Gallery in the 2018 JerseyArts.com People’s Choice Awards on March 14 at ArtPride New Jersey’s headquarters in the Lyceum Hall Center for the Arts in Burlington, New Jersey.

The Awards, which take place annually to honor the work of New Jersey’s vital, vibrant and diverse arts community, saw more than 18,000 ballots cast statewide. The Arts Council of Princeton was amongst 116 arts organizations and 11 downtown districts nominated for the Awards in 18 categories.

“It is the sixth time receiving this award, confirming the people’s love of our Taplin Gallery,” said Taneshia Nash Laird, Arts Council’s Executive Director. “I credit Artistic Director, Maria Evans, for her passionate thoughtful approach to bringing important relevant work to our galleries in the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts.”

“For more than a decade, the People’s Choice Awards has blown us away, and this year is no exception,” said Allison Tratner, Interim Executive Director of the State Arts Council, during today’s awards ceremony. “The outstanding nominees get better every year, and their passionate patrons and fans come out and vote by the thousands, making it known that the arts in New Jersey are not to be missed.”

The JerseyArts.com People’s Choice Awards are coordinated through the Discover Jersey Arts program, a co-sponsored project of the ArtPride New Jersey Foundation and New Jersey State Council on the Arts aimed at increasing the awareness of and participation in the arts. The Arts Council of Princeton’s Taplin Gallery was founded in 2008 and has won Favorite Art Gallery in the Discover Jersey Arts People’s Choice Awards for six of the past seven years. Located in the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts, the Taplin Gallery is run by ACP artistic director Maria Evans and has featured artists such as Philip Pearlstein, Polly Apfelbaum, and Willie Cole, among other notable artists. The Taplin hosts a variety of events that are free and open to the public, including gallery openings and artist talks, as well as educational programming for local students K-12. ACP exhibitions and related educational programs receive funding from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, Bob and Cynthia Hendrickson, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

The Arts Council of Princeton, founded in 1967, is a non-profit organization with a mission of Building Community through the Arts. Housed in the landmark Paul Robeson Center for the Arts, designed by architect Michael Graves, the Arts Council fulfills its mission by presenting a wide range of programs including exhibitions, performances, free community cultural events, and studio-based classes and workshops in a wide range of media.
