📰 News we're reading

1. Princeton Parking Rates To Rise Sept. 14 Under New Ordinance (patch.com) — Parking in Princeton is about to get more expensive, as new metered rates, garage fees, and permit costs take effect Sept. 14 under an ordinance adopted by Mayor and Council. Officials say higher fees reflect rising parking expenses and demand, while keeping the Dinky station lot at $5 per day after residents argued that higher costs could hurt transit ridership and downtown access.

2. Princeton Community Housing Marks 25 Years of Scholarship Recipients (towntopics.com) — Princeton Community Housing is celebrating 25 years of local residents earning NAHMA and JAHMA college scholarships, with 11 Princeton Community Village and Griggs Farm students receiving a record $54,000 this year. At a recent gathering at the Ted Vial Clubhouse, Princeton High School principal Cecelia Xie Birge and program leaders highlighted how stable, affordable homes and community support are helping these students pursue four years of college and even graduate study.

3. Remember Harmful Algal Blooms? The Watershed Institute Wins Grant to Keep a Close Eye on Them (tapinto.net) — Lake Carnegie and nearby waterways will get closer monitoring after the Watershed Institute, based in the Princeton‑area Stony Brook‑Millstone watershed, won a $35,000 grant. The funding will buy new equipment and support 55 volunteer community scientists tracking harmful algal blooms at 80 sites. Educational outreach to officials and residents aims to prevent future health warnings like those Princeton saw two years ago.

4. Troutman Pepper Hit With Heart Attack Lawsuit (jdjournal.com) — A lawyer based in Troutman Pepper's Princeton office has sued the firm in federal court, claiming his career stalled after a 2023 heart attack at work and after he raised billing concerns. He alleges retaliation, lost partnership prospects, and a denied bonus, while the firm firmly denies all accusations. The case, still pending, could spotlight workplace and ethics issues in Princeton's legal community.

5. Sherrill First NJ Gov. in 22 Years to Live at Mansion Inspired by Southern Slave Plantations (shorenewsnetwork.com) — New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill has moved her family into Drumthwacket, making the historic Princeton estate the full‑time governor's residence for the first time in 22 years. The piece explores the mansion's roots, including its antebellum, plantation‑inspired architecture and former owner Charles Smith Olden's complicated Civil War‑era record. For Princeton residents, it's a reminder that state politics and contested history now live right in town.
