Blog: Songs For Marilyn

The fundraiser Songs for Marilyn was started to support my friend & patient Marilyn Hyncik as she recovers from treatments for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

For a change of pace, I want to share with everyone in Montgomery Township, Princeton, and the environs my philosophy of patient care.

This coming December, I will celebrate 15 years of private optometric practice at Montgomery Eye Care in Skillman, NJ. Shortly after the office opened, I made the decision to create a concierge-like practice. It is important to me that my patients have an EXCEPTIONAL patient care experience each time I see them, and that they know that I take every aspect of their health, life style, and visual demands into consideration when examining their eyes.

One of the first patients I had the pleasure of taking care of at MEC, was Marilyn Hyncik. Marilyn is currently undergoing treatment for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma that necessitates that she be quarantined from her family and friends.

I understand the importance of supporting the greater cause (all of those patients with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma), but I wanted to do something to show Marilyn that I care about her and support her during her treatment and recovery. As a consequence of her illness and its treatment, her immune system is suppressed, so the traditional things I would send to let a girlfriend know I care (fresh flowers, a gourmet fruit basket, perfumed lotions) could potentially cause an allergic reaction for her.

Since her grand-daugher, Lily’s birth about 2.5 years ago, I looked forward to Marilyn dropping in with new pictures or video of Lily. Marilyn became very adept with her iPad, and was excited about the latest accessories for it. The last time Marilyn was in, I shared with her my desire to give her something that would comfort her in her recuperative phase.  We spoke about how I had sent a CD player and lots of Perry Como and Beethoven CDs to my aunt when she was undergoing chemo & radiation for breast cancer.

So……”Songs for Marilyn” was born. With the help and guidance of my PR agent a website was created so that other members of the Montgomery Eye Care family could give Marilyn the gift of song/movies to comfort her and entertain her as she gains strength.
