Mad Men Viewing Party Ideas

The fifth season of mad Men is about to premiere after a long hiatus, so what better way to celebrate than with a 1960s inspired viewing party?

Anyone who’s a fan of Mad Men knows the hit series is premiering it’s fifth season on Sunday, March 25th after a one and a half year hiatus. I can imagine there will be a good number of local viewing parties. Here are some tips on making it retro and fun… and don’t forget to send MY invitation!

Dress for Success

Banana Republic, who just relocated to Market Fair, has a Mad Men men’s collection and women’s collection. If you don’t have anything retro or classic in your wardrobe, consider picking up a piece or two, or an entire outfit to get into character. Also take a look at Jane for some vintage items. You can get some retro eyeglass or sunglass frames from Au Courant or Montgomery Eye Care. Ask guests if possible to dress the part as well.

Set it to Music

Music sets the tone. Have your favorite 60s tunes playing as guests arrive. The AMC site just released a Mad Men Season 4 playlist (previous seasons are listed below it). Head over to Princeton Record exchange for some tunes. If you still have a turntable, buy some vinyl to really impress the gang!

Bottoms Up

Cocktails MUST be served. AMC has a cocktail guide for all of the favorite libations of the time. Click on the colorful photo of your desired drink, and you’ll get the recipe. Go to Witherspoon Wines, Claridge Wine & Liquor, Princeton Wine & Liquor, or Varsity Liquors for all of your cocktail needs.

Food, Glorious Food

Serve deviled eggs, pigs in a blanket, Chicken Kiev, ambrosia, pineapple upside down cake, well, you get the picture. Find food of the era by checking out 1960s FoodMore 1960s-Inspired Party Ideas, and The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook.

Let Me Entertain You

You HAVE to have a conga line to get in the spirit of things AND it’s fun. If that’s not your style, at least dance the Watusi, the Hot Potato, or the Twist. Play a round of charades if you have time, and show old episodes of Mad Men on various screens, but have the volume on mute before the main event.

More Ideas

I just discovered the Mad Men online party planner. You should be set after reading this. All you have to do next is watch the show, and have a cocktail.
