Hey Suz- Walk in MY Shoes: Title Boxing Princeton

Suzanne O'Rourke of LocalChatBox.com "walks in the shoes" of owner Tiffany Perkins of Title Boxing Princeton.

Have you ever wanted to walk in the shoes of another person for the day? “Hey Suz, Walk in My Shoes” is a blog series that I started to follow different business owners and people of interest around for the day to learn what it’s REALLY like behind the scenes.

Today (Tuesday, April 16) I walked in the shoes of Owner, Tiffany Perkins of "Title Boxing Princeton" Located at 485 Nassau Park Blvd in Princeton, NJ.

A little side note about my experience working out with Tiffany: While I do work out at a gym, this was a VERY different type of work out.  I never sweat, but BOY did I sweat!!

My Day Begins

Tiffany got me started by "wrapping my hands."  When you join Title Boxing Princeton you can purchase hand wraps for $5.  They have loner gloves available or you can purchase them for around $25.  That's the only investment you need to enjoy your membership.

Today we were taking a "Power Hour Boxing" class.  During this class you can burn up to 1,000 calories in 1 hour.  This is a high intensity total body fitness class. There is a 15 minute warm up, 30 minutes "on the bag" and 15 minute core workout.

Before coming in today I had a pre-concieved idea as to what I was in store for. But I was wrong!  I was introduced to our class instructor, Ashley Legrand.  Ashley is a Rutgers graduate with a double major in Public Health and Psychology and a minor in Dance.  She has been boxing and kickboxing for 4 years at a Martial Arts School.

She started us with some jumping jacks, knees high jumps, jogging around the room, and a few other warm ups.  Litterally I was sweating after our first fifteen minutes.  My pleading eyes looked at Tiffany, who chuckled and said "And that was just the warm up!"

Then we put on our gloves! We all had our own bag to work with and then at one point we paired up and worked out on a bag together. One of us worked the upper bag and the other worked the lower bag

There was 8 of us in the class.  The studio opened 2 weeks ago but the Official Grand Opening is Thursday April 18th.  There will be a FREE Power Hour workout from 3-4pm and then a ribbon cuttingceramony at 4:30pm with Mayor Hsueh of West Windsor.  There will also be vendors, food, smoothies and free chair massages from 3-6pm.

There was a positive vibe in the room with an equal number of men versus women taking the class.  I had a chance to speak with one of the women, Jenna Lichtenstein. She joined Title Boxing  when they opened two weeks ago.  She said "I just love it!  These are the hardest workouts but I feel great and I keep coming back.  I come in three times  week and I get my butt kicked and I'm not bored the way I was working out at my gym."

During the actual "workout" Ashley would motivate us, correct us if our form was off and keep us focused.  I have NEVER hit a punching bag and I wondered what that might feel like.  At first it felt funny and awkward, but with Ashely's help I felt like a Pro by the end of the class.

CONSUMER TIP! -  They offer both monthly and annual contracts. With their "premier" card you can work out at any Title Boxing Facility, take advantage of unlimited power hour classes including kick-boxing power hour, use their fitness machines (ie treadmill, elliptical), as well as use the bags.

Get In the Ring:

I got in the ring with trainer, Ashley.  They offer 1 on 1 personal training "in the ring."  This is a non-contact fitness concept.  I thought for sure I was going to hit Ashley a few times when she held up the gloves for me to punch, but she knew just where my glove was going to land.  She placed her hands strategically so that I never hit her, only the bag.

I learned that Tiffany used to work on Wall Street as a client strategist for Investment Banks and Hedge Funds.  Her husband passed away from Pancreatic Cancer when her daughter was only five years old. According to Tiffany her husband was totally into fitness, more hardcore than traditional. He would have loved Title Boxing.

Thus far those who have signed up have been all age ranges.  The youngest so far is eight years old and the oldest is in their 70's.   Title Boxing is for anyone looking to get fit.  The offer a money back guarantee if you work out 3 times a week for 3 months YOU WILL SEE RESULTS.   And after my first work out I can tell you that there is no way that you will not see results if you commit to it.  I was "dripping/sweating".  It was an intense, no nonsense work out.  But even if you are not in shape, and intimidated by the idea of boxing, I can tell you that it was a lot of fun with great music, amazing instructors and there were people all different age ranges and body types participating.

Does the Shoe Fit?

I learned today that being the new owner of a fitness facility is going to be a lot of work but so rewarding.Tiffany knew everyone by name.  She will get to see people change their body over time.  Ashley said it best.   "This is a community place. We get to help people transform their body which also changes their life."

Thank you Tiffany for letting me “walk in your shoes” today.  I just scheduled my massage for Thursday at Massage LuXe....god knows I'm gonna need it!!!
