Bravura Philharmonic Features Kate Liu, International Chopin Competition Bronze Medalist, March 20

Chiu-Tze Lin leads Bravura Philharmonic with Kate Liu, the first American in 20 years to win a top three prize at Int'l Chopin Competition.

Kate Liu, the 21-year-old American pianist who stormed the world by winning the bronze medal of the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw last fall, is also the first American to have won any of the top three prizes in the Chopin International Competition in 20 years.

Ms. Liu will be soloing with the award-winning Bravura Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at the Nicholas Music Center, Rutgers University, 7 p.m.

Led by music director and conductor Chiu-Tze Lin, this concert marks the first performance Ms. Liu is making with an orchestra in the US since winning the International Chopin Competition and is the only opportunity to hear her play with an orchestra for the remainder of the 2016 concert season. Ms. Liu will perform the Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor.

Kate is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music with Professor Robert McDonald. She previously studied at the Music Institute of Chicago with Alan Chow, Micah Yui and Emilio del Rosario.

Ms. Liu is the winner of top prizes in several competitions including the Asia-Pacific International Chopin Piano Competition, Montreal International Music Competition, and New York International Piano Competition. In both 2011 and 2012, she was chosen to receive scholarship awards from the Chopin Foundation of the United States.

Kate continues to perform around the world and in prestigious US venues; she has appeared at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. When she was 14, Kate was selected to perform a four-hand duet with Lang Lang in Chicago’s Symphony Hall. Kate has appeared on National Public Radio’s From the Top, one of the most widely known radio shows for talented young musicians.

Kate has performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic and Poznan Philharmonic Orchestra in Poland, and the Daegu (South Korea), Evanston, Montreal, Rochester, Hilton Head, Cleveland, and Skokie Valley Orchestras.

The Bravura Philharmonic Orchestra will also perform The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra by Benjamin Britten, which is a wonderful educational piece aimed to introduce the various orchestral instruments to audiences of all ages. The program includes the “Haffner Symphony,” a famous work that was written by Mozart for his patron and mayor of Salzburg, Sigmund Haffner.

This is truly a not-to-be missed performance in New Jersey of an award winning orchestra and a rising concert pianist whose achievement has been recognized by Governor Christie, Senators Cory Booker and Robert Menendez, and Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman.
