The Princeton Board of Health banned the sale of tobacco and nicotine products, including cigarettes, to anyone under the age of 21 this week, Planet Princeton reports.

New Jersey residents must be 19 to purchase cigarettes, but municipalities are permitted to increase that age through local ordinances.

Violators will be subject to a $250 fine for the first offense, $500 for the second and $1,000 for each subsequent fine, according to the report.

The new law takes effect May 12, according to the Princeton Packet. There are 18 stores that sell tobacco/nicotine products in Princeton.
