“This funding is critical and will ensure our firefighters can continue to protect Trenton’s families and businesses,” Menendez said in a statement. “The best way to show our gratitude to the men and women who risk their lives is by providing them with the tools, resources, and support they need to do their jobs safely and efficiently.”

The AFG program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“Trenton’s firefighters run into danger and risk their lives to protect us,” Booker said. “I’m proud to secure funding that will provide them with the equipment and resources they need to perform their jobs safely and effectively, and protect their community.”

Trenton Mayor W. Reed Gusciora thanked the senators for securing the funding saying it will help provide necessary improvements to the city’s firehouses.

The AFG program provides financial assistance to local professional and voluntary fire departments, emergency medical services organizations, and state fire training academies to equip and train first responders.

New Jersey has received over $180 million in funding from the AFG program since 2001.
