1 Killed, 3 Injured In Jersey Shore Boat Crash, Police Say

TOMS RIVER, NJ — One person has died and three others were injured after a boat hit a channel marker in Barnegat Bay late Saturday, New Jersey State Police said Sunday.

The crash was reported at 10:56 p.m., Trooper Christopher Postorino said.

Five people were aboard a 32-foot Boston Whaler that was traveling through the Intracoastal Waterway and hit a channel marker, Postorino said.

After the collision, Kevin Wells, 39, from Warren, drove the vessel to a residence on Silver Lagoon Drive in Toms River, where emergency personnel responded to render aid.

Michael T. Bereheiko, 26, from Green Brook, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Postorino said.

Steven Pochick, 27, of Green Brook, and Nicholas Cherasaro, 27, of North Plainfield, suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital, he said.

Sarah Stulh, 24, of Bayville, suffered minor injuries, Postorino said.

The crash remains under investigation, Postorino said.

NJ 101.5 reported the boat hit the marker while traveling at high speed, quoting unnamed law enforcement sources.

The crash comes six days after two Ocean County children died when the boat they were passengers on hit a channel marker near Berkeley Township.

Mya and Sigmund Golabek, ages 9 and 7,died after they were thrown overboard when the boat hit an Intracoastal Waterway marker, state police said.
