Firefighters Rescue Dog Stuck In Thin Ice On Bear Creek Mercer Co.

MERCER COUNTY, NJ – Firefighters rescued a dog who was stuck in thin ice on Bear Creek Thursday in West Windsor.

Around 9:30 a.m., on-duty personnel from the West Windsor Fire Department responded to Village Grande at Bear Creek for a report of an animal in distress.

While en route, firefighters were made aware that a dog was stuck in thin ice on creek which is a short distance from the road.

Before calling 911, the dog's owner attempted to reach the dog but failed, the fire department said.

Once on scene, Firefighter Oravsky donned proper PPE and entered the water. Oravsky was able to grasp the pup and return to the bank to pass him over to Firefighters Vandegrift and Moore, the fire department said.

The dog was taken into an area to warm up while the owner arranged transport to a nearby veterinary hospital for evaluation.

Authorities have asked residents to stay off the ice as the thickness is “unpredictable and unsafe.”

"If you see a person or an animal in distress on the ice, do not try to rescue them. Call 9-11 while maintaining a visual on them until help arrives, and you can point them out to the responder," authorities said.
