How Safe Are Towns In New Jersey? MoneyGeek Shares New Findings

See how New Jersey cities and towns are ranked in MoneyGeek's latest report on safest and most dangerous places to live.

PRINCETON, NJ — Four New Jersey town ranked among the top 10 safest towns in America, and one was among the most dangerous, according to a new report by Moneygeek.

Marlboro Township (6), Bridgewater Township (7), Fair Lawn (8) and Monroe Township (10) ranked in the top 10 safest places to live, while Camden, NJ was rated among the top 10 most dangerous places in the country.

In a report released earlier this week, Moneygeek analyzed crime statistics and calculated the cost of crime. They used data from FBI's yearly Uniform Crime Report which included violent crimes like murder and sexual assault, and burglaries and car theft. According to Moneygeek, while property crimes were more common, violent crimes were most costly.

To determine the crime rates per 100,000 people, they added population data to the analysis.

Moneygeek focused on cities with a population between 30,000 and 100,000 residents.

Here are the top 10 safest towns in America 2021:

  1. Franklin, MA
  2. Shrewsbury, MA
  3. Carmel, NY
  4. Northampton Township, PA
  5. Yorktown, NY
  6. Marlboro Township, NJ
  7. Bridgewater Township, NJ
  8. Fair Lawn, NJ
  9. Parkland, FL
  10. Monroe Township, NJ

Most of their safest small cities and towns in the country are in the Northeast, with the top two in Massachusetts and six of the top ten in New York or New Jersey.

The report found that small cities and towns were a lot safer than large cities. However, some small cities and towns also showed crime rates comparable to big cities.

MoneyGeek, a personal finance technology company, relied on research from professors Kathryn McCollister and Michael French of the University of Miami and Hai Fang of the University of Colorado Denver for this survey.
